The Storm

Awake from a dream that I always dream
To nuzzle the pillows of my warm lover’s arms
Assemble the pieces of who I have been
When the chirp of the bosun’s pipe
Sounds the alarm
Gaze through the sunlight in the early dawn

The harbor scent pungent
With bird shite and bait I begrudge to go on
The shore pulls away
With the same graceful sway as she’s always before

But I watch myself leave from a piece of me
I could have been left ashore
We sailed for the fort in spite of the storm
As I looked to the sky my heart turned to stone

Then the wind, it’s fetters broke
And ushered cloud, like chimney smoke
That raced across the sky to choke
The seven seas beneath it’s yoke

Writhing brine, Crashing skies
Captain never changes action ‘til he’s satisfied
We’ll be fine, Draw the line
Fear the passion of the captain
Will be our demise

“Turn back, my Captain!” our Ship’s Master cried
“If you bring her about, we’ll reach harbor in time!”
The minister, kidnapped, bid each man “Repent!
Too late to turn back, but not to relent!”

Search through the darkness by flashes of lightning strike
The heavens erupting with razors of wind and boulders of ice
The sea roared as loud as our guns
As the waves carried over the rail
A clewless sheet gripped In my hand told the tale I’d already failed
In the face of the storm, we all fight alone
As I looked to the sky my heart turned to stone

Wages of rage, Changing maze
Ocean water mountains tower Like a marble cage
Don’t let go, Keep control
“Onward!” cried the captain “Keep on doing what you know!”

But the breech in the hull drank deeply the sea
When the waves broke apart what was left, at the seams
The captain died screaming and clutching the helm
“Each man for himself, and I’ll see you in Hell”

Search through the water for a trace of dawn
Pulled by the swell can’t tell my way up from a hole in the ground
The sea throws her waves with the same graceful sway as she’s always before
I simply obeyed and rode on the wave to the eye of the storm

Think back... How did this all begin?
What life have I been woken in?
Think back... No one to blame but me
What life? This has all been a dream

Seawater dancing with cigarette tar
I’d kick but my fight just won’t fight anymore
Reach for the light but with what, I don’t know
Smile at Mama on the day I was born
As I yearn to the eye of the storm
Pour one round for the heroes
And those we fought beside
And pour one more for the cowards
And those who simply died
The good and bad both are brothers
They wrestle all the time
So raise one more for my brothers
Across the other side

Pour one round for the heroes
And those we fought beside
And pour one more for the cowards
And those who simply died
The rain will fall
On the guilty, the victim, and the kind
So raise one more all my brothers
Across the other side

I’m alive?! I’m Alive!!
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Thank You! I’m Alive!!!
Surface and breathe
Like I’ve never breathed
Clutching the topmast
Like my warm Father’s arms
Assemble the pieces of who I have been
When the chirp of an ocean gull
Sounds like a bard

Gaze at the sunlight
Breaking through the storm
The Harbor scent fragrant With ozone and hope
I rejoice to go on
The waves will abate
With the same graceful sway
That they’ve always before
But I watch myself cling from a piece of me
I’d never be left ashore
